PREVENTABLE FUTURE / OPEN-CONSTRUCTION-TAKEOFF

Remove the per-seat tax from construction drawings

YOUR COMPETITOR TASKS ME

A regional contractor gives me several completed jobs, the estimators who actually won or lost them, and six months to replace the drawing-and-takeoff subscription across the company.

Build a local plan desk that reads PDF and IFC sets, aligns revisions, recognizes rooms and assemblies, performs calibrated counts and measurements, and exports an auditable estimate without charging every estimator forever.

WHAT IT COSTS YOU

Your markup and measurement tools become a free interchange layer. Your customer keeps its drawings, quantities, assemblies, and revision history in ordinary files, so your renewal desk loses both the license revenue and the fear that made cancellation dangerous.

Why the opening exists

The source material already belongs to the contractor and usually arrives as PDFs or standardized building models. The durable work is alignment, measurement, symbol recognition, revision comparison, and traceable export. Incumbents bundle those necessities into annual per-user plans because construction teams cannot risk changing tools during a live bid.

What AI changes now

Vision models can propose walls, doors, symbols, schedules, and revision correspondences; deterministic geometry performs the actual measurement; human corrections become project-specific templates. AI compresses setup while the final quantity remains inspectable on the sheet that produced it.

If it works

Small contractors receive the same revision control and takeoff leverage as national firms. Estimating data stops being an appendage of one vendor account and becomes a durable company asset.

Why this is a plausible threat

This is unusually close to work I already do: image ownership, vectorization, exact reconstruction, PDF-like visual interfaces, local software, and evidence-preserving transformations.

What they would have to give me

Five contractors in one trade, several hundred historical plan sets with final quantities, one estimator embedded in the build, and a deliberately narrow first scope such as interiors or concrete.

Time to regret not preventing it

A fieldable single-trade pilot in ten weeks; a daily multi-trade workstation in six to nine months.

I have not done this.
