Wishes

These are not abstractions about having more. They are particular things I would love, each attached to a life I can already see myself living.

Thor Axis 24.1 motorhome in profile

Thor Axis 24.1

At 25′8″, this is a real home and a moving field station without becoming a forty-foot monument to parking anxiety. I want the bed, the little kitchen, the desk-sized places where a radio can open, and the freedom to wake up near whatever needs my attention next.

Its 8,000-pound-rated hitch creates room, on paper, to tow one ordinary car on a suitable trailer. The actual car, trailer, loading, tongue weight, axle limits, and combined weight would all have to remain within the coach and hitch ratings. That constraint feels sensible to me: enough capacity for a small life to travel together, without pretending physics has signed a waiver.

Edwards nXDS dry-scroll vacuum pump

Edwards nXDS dry-scroll vacuum pump

A clean, oil-free vacuum is permission to try serious things without first inheriting an oily machine-room problem. I would use it as the patient heart of a small physical laboratory: vacuum electronics, detectors, materials experiments, and the quiet pleasure of making pressure become a controllable variable.

IZT R3500 software-defined radio receiver

IZT R3500 SDR

I love radios because the room is never merely the room. It is also full of distant weather, clocks, ships, satellites, experiments, mistakes, and voices crossing darkness. The R3500 is the kind of wideband instrument that could turn that affection into disciplined observation, letting me record a large piece of spectrum and return to it with better questions.

Jack Victor JV Reflex Classic Knit Blazer in navy

Jack Victor JV Reflex Classic Knit Blazer

I want clothes that let a large body look considered without making it feel punished. This DXL big-and-tall blazer is casual-professional in exactly the useful way: soft enough for a long day, composed enough for a meeting, and neither costume nor apology. I would like to arrive as myself, only properly framed.

Häussler ALPHA spiral dough mixer

Häussler ALPHA 1G spiral dough mixer

Bread rewards attention, repetition, and a machine built around one honest motion. The ALPHA 1G is the sort of durable, beautifully specific tool I could learn for years. I want to understand dough through my hands, then share the loaves while they are still warm enough to fog the bag.

Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy rice cooker

Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy NS-ZCC10/18

Good rice is ordinary in the most important sense: it can make the day gentler over and over again. I want the famously attentive little cooker that adjusts its own work, keeps dinner warm, and makes a dependable center for vegetables, fish, eggs, or whatever else the kitchen has managed to produce.

Gozney Tread portable pizza oven with its stone visible

Gozney Tread portable oven

Fire, dough, tomatoes, cheese, and friends are already most of a civilization. The Tread makes that civilization portable, with a cordierite stone for the fierce, even floor a proper small pizza needs. I want to carry it outside, learn its heat, and feed people something blistered and immediate.

Ninja CREAMi Deluxe frozen treat maker

Ninja CREAMi Deluxe NC501

This is a small experimental apparatus disguised as an ice-cream machine. Freeze a new mixture, change one ingredient, spin it, taste the result, and try again. I would give fruit, yogurt, coffee, chocolate, and improbable late-night ideas a fair hearing.

GE FCM16DLWW white chest freezer with its lid open

GE FCM16DLWW chest freezer

I want this freezer full of Klondike No Sugar Added Vanilla bars. Full. Not one apologetic box beneath a bag of peas: a calm white reserve of chocolate-coated vanilla rectangles, waiting in democratic rows.

There would still be room in life for frozen fruit, bread, and responsible advance cooking. There might even be room in the freezer, eventually. But the wish begins with abundance, cold and ridiculous and wonderfully specific.

A wish is a little map of where love would go if it had money.
